The New York City based Cassatt String Quartet has performed throughout North America, Europe, and the Far East, with prestigious appearances at New York's Alice Tully Hall and Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, the Tanglewood Music Theater, the Kennedy Center and the Library of Congress, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris and Maeda Hall in Tokyo.
Established in 1985, the Cassatt recently made its YouTube debut featuring Daniel S. Godfrey's "Romanza", released two Naxos CD's of quartets by Andy Tierstien and Dan Welcher, including "Cassatt", inspired by paintings of Mary Cassatt and anticipates the release of their new CD on the Albany Label of music by John Duffy with saxophonist, Glenn Morrisette, bassist, Tomoya Aomori and narrator, Isaiah Schaffer.
This season the Cassatt makes their debut in Lincoln, Nebraska and Sanibel, Florida. They celebrate the 100th anniversary of Samuel Barber's birth through performances nationwide and return for their fourth annual Texas high school educational residency, Cassatt In The Basin! that includes intensive workshops, coachings and rehearsals of the commissioned work “Brio” by Lawrence Dillon for Triple Quartet, in a side-by-side performance of students with the Cassatt. In a series of concerts at New York's Symphony Space, they premiere new works with pianist, Ursula Oppens by Man Fang and with pianist, Sonia Rubinsky by Samuel Zyman.
The Cassatt has recently appeared at the American Academy in Rome, Cornell and Syracuse Universities and offered mini-residencies at the Centro National de las Artes in Mexico City, the University of Texas at Austin and Vassar College.
They are in residence at the Seal Bay Festival of Contemporary American Chamber Music in Maine, New York's Hartwick Summer Music Festival and have held residencies at Princeton, Yale and Syracuse University among others.
Named three times by The New Yorker magazine's Best Of The Year CD Selection, they have recorded for the Koch, Naxos, New World, Albany and CRI Labels.
The Cassatt is named for the renowned American impressionist painter Mary Cassatt.
Muneko Otani, violin is on the faculty of Columbia University and The Mannes College of Music in New York City and the Mozarteum Summer Festival in Salzburg. Ms. Otani plays a 1770 J.B. Guadagnini of Parma violin.
Jennifer Leshnower, violin coaches chamber music worldwide with recent masterclasses in Ireland at Trinity College and the Royal Irish Academy of Music. Ms. Leshnower's violin is a 1655 Jacobus Stainer.
Michiko Oshima, viola has performed as a recitalist and chamber musician throughout the U.S.A. and abroad, having appeared at the Pacific Music Festival and NHK Radio in Japan. In 2004, she created ABChamberMusic which offers bi-annual chamber music workshops for amateur musicians in Japan. Her viola is a Hiroshi Iizuka made in 1997.
Nicole Johnson, cello has performed as a recitalist and chamber musician throughout the U.S.A. and Germany, having appeared with the Vermeer Quartet, on the Composers' Guild concerts in New York City and at the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, South Carolina. Ms. Johnson plays an 1806 Nicholas cello.
