"an extraordinary quartet" – The New York Times
On November 20, 2024 at 7:30 pm Voices Up! presents the Cassatt String Quartet at Fordham University's Lincoln Center Campus in Manhattan.
The program includes the world premiere of Lawrence Kramer's String Quartet No. 3 "Beginning with Time." The title comes from a poem by Arthur Rimbaud: "'Change our fate, sift out the plagues, beginning with time,' the children sing."
Also on the program is "Modes" by Dorothy Rudd Moore (1944-2022), who was a co-founder of the Society of Black Composers. "Moore’s music is at once richly structured, quirky, and whimsical, at once emphasizing form and line as well as lightness and, at times, humor," writes Director of American Composers Alliance Gina Genova. The program ends with Dmitri Shostakovich's String Quartet No. 14, written in 1973 for the cellist of the Beethoven Quartet.
Tickets to the November 20, 7:30 pm concert at Fordham University's Lincoln Center campus (113 W 60th St, 12th Fl Lounge, New York, NY) are $25 general admission ($15 students), available here.
Hailed for its “mighty rapport and relentless commitment,” the Cassatt String Quartet has performed to critical acclaim across the world since its founding in 1985, with appearances at Alice Tully Hall, Weill Recital Hall, Tanglewood Music Center, the Kennedy Center, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Centro National de las Artes, Maeda Hall, and Beijing’s Central Conservatory. The group’s discography includes over forty recordings, including three discs that were named “10 Best Classical Recordings” in The New Yorker. The CSQ is named for the American Impressionist painter Mary Cassatt.
The composer Lawrence Kramer founded the concert series Voices Up! in 2009 to bring performances of contemporary chamber and vocal music to Fordham University’s Lincoln Center campus in Manhattan. The series has presented numerous world premieres, and partners annually with Fordham University Press to present compositions set to prizewinning texts from the press's annual poetry contest. Voices Up! has featured new works by such distinguished living composers as Victoria Bond, David Dzubay, Paul Moravec, and Kramer himself. Featured performers have included the PUBLIQuartet, tenor Rufus Müller, the choral ensemble C4, and Contemporaneous.
